How to Write a LinkedIn About Section, With Examples

How to Write a LinkedIn About Section, With Examples: a before-and-after example

Score your About section or CV summary, free

Most readers see only the first two lines of your About section. LinkedIn hides the rest behind “see more”, and most people never click.

So the first two lines do the whole job: they say what you do and the result that made your name. Everything after them supports that claim.

The four-paragraph pattern

  1. Who you are and whom you serve, in one or two sentences.
  2. The problems you are employed to solve, as two or three concrete examples with figures.
  3. The methods, standards, and tools you work with, as a plain list in a sentence.
  4. How to approach you, and for what.

Write it in the first person, in the active voice, in 200 to 300 words. Every claim carries a fact; every adjective goes.

One operations manager, before and after

Before: “Motivated operations professional with a proven track record in logistics and supply chain. Passionate about process improvement and building high-performing teams. Strong communicator, detail-oriented and a team player who thrives in fast-paced environments.”

After: “I am an operations manager in freight and warehousing, managing day-to-day operations across two sites for a regional freight business in Toowoomba. My work is keeping freight moving on time, safely, and accurately. I manage a team of 51 warehouse staff and team leaders, oversee safety audits, and work with stakeholders on on-time delivery, which moved from 86% to 95%. I helped with the rollout of a new inventory system, which lifted stock accuracy from 94% to 99.2%. I work with Manhattan WMS, WHS compliance, multi-site team management, and weekly operational reporting. If you are hiring for operations roles in regional freight or distribution, message me here.”

The first version could belong to anyone. The second could belong to one person only, and a screen can count every line of it.

Four things to cut

  • Every adjective that describes you rather than your work: motivated, passionate, dynamic, results-driven.
  • “Proven track record” and “extensive experience”. Name the record and the years.
  • Third-person narration. “John is an experienced leader” reads as a press release. Write “I”.
  • A closing slogan. End with how to reach you and for what.
