How to Write a LinkedIn Profile as a Graduate With Little Experience

How to Write a LinkedIn Profile as a Graduate With Little Experience: a before-and-after example

Score your LinkedIn headline free, in 10 seconds

You have less job history than the other applicants. You may have more evidence than you think.

Screening software weighs potential through specifics, never through adjectives. “Motivated graduate with strong communication skills” gives it nothing to count. A capstone project with a named tool, a team size, and a result gives it three things.

Treat every project as a role

Write each significant project the way you would write a job: what you built or analysed, with which tools, for whom, at what scale, and what came of it. A group assignment with four people and a client brief is a project with a team and a stakeholder.

One graduate, before and after

Before: “Final-year project on stormwater management.”

After, with the facts added: “Final-year project: modelled stormwater flows for a 12-hectare residential subdivision in Civil 3D and HEC-RAS, in a team of four; our design cut peak run-off by 30% against the council baseline and received a high distinction.”

Same project. Now a civil engineering screen finds the tools, the scale, the team, and the result. In Profile Upgrade’s composite example, that rewrite lifted the profile’s scan score from 28 to 74.

Five moves for a graduate profile

  1. Write a headline that names your discipline and your target: “Civil engineering graduate · Stormwater and road design · Seeking graduate roles in Queensland”.
  2. Put your degree first, with the year and any distinction, then the two or three units most relevant to the roles you want.
  3. List placements, internships, and part-time work with what you did, whom you did it for, and any number you can truthfully give: shifts covered, customers served, tickets closed.
  4. Name the software and tools you can use, in the words a job ad would use.
  5. Add one line of responsibility taken: a club treasurer role, a team captaincy, a shift you ran. Responsibility is evidence.

Check whether your profile gives the screen enough to count

Choose “Graduate or early-career professional” in Profile Upgrade’s free scan. The report scores your profile out of 100, shows how a screen would file you, and rewrites three lines with the specifics a graduate panel seeks.
