How to Write a LinkedIn Profile for Board and Non-Executive Director Roles

A board reads a profile differently from an employer. It seeks governance, not management: what you have overseen, on which committees, with what fiscal exposure, and where you showed independent judgement.
Most executive profiles carry none of this, because it happened alongside the day job and never made the profile.
What a nomination committee weighs
- Boards and committees served, with the calibre and sector of each.
- Committee roles: audit and risk, finance, remuneration, nominations, clinical governance.
- Fiscal oversight: the size of the budgets and balance sheets you have overseen.
- Risk and compliance exposure: regulated sectors, major incidents handled, audits passed.
- Formal governance qualifications, such as the AICD Company Directors Course.
- Evidence of independent judgement: a decision where you dissented, or a question you pressed.
One director, before and after
Before: “Board member, community housing provider, 2019 to present.”
After, with the facts added: “Non-executive director, community housing provider with 1,800 tenancies and a $140 million asset base, 2019 to present. Chair of the audit and risk committee since 2021; led the committee through the transition to a new regulatory framework with a clean audit each year. GAICD.”
The first line says you sat on a board. The second says what you governed, at what scale, and how well. In Profile Upgrade’s composite example, that rewrite lifted the profile’s scan score from 28 to 78.
Four moves for a board profile
- Headline: “Non-executive director · Audit and risk chair · Not-for-profit and aged care boards · GAICD”.
- Add a Board roles section, or list each board as its own Experience entry, with the organisation’s scale and your committee roles.
- In your About section, name the sectors you know from the inside and the governance questions you bring to a board table.
- Feature something that proves the record in public: an annual report you signed, a governance review you led.
