How to Write an Executive LinkedIn Profile

At executive level, the reader is a board, a search consultant, or an AI assistant asked whom to approach. All three weigh the same four things: the scale of the enterprise you ran, the accountability you held, the strategy you set and delivered, and the decisions you made with their results.
Most executive profiles state the title and the tenure, and omit all four.
Scale, stated in numbers
Revenue, headcount, geography, budget. A general manager who writes “Led a national business” has told the reader nothing a screen can rank. “General manager of a $180 million, 900-person logistics business across five states” gives it four figures at once.
Accountability, named
Profit and loss, capital allocation, regulatory exposure, board reporting. Name your accountabilities in the board’s own words: profit and loss, capital, compliance. “Full P&L accountability, reporting to the board quarterly” is a line search consultants look for by those words.
One executive, before and after
Before: “Chief operating officer. Led operations and drove transformation across the group.”
After, with the facts added: “Chief operating officer of a $300 million regional health network, 2,400 staff across nine sites, reporting to the CEO and the board’s finance committee. Set and delivered a three-year operating strategy that lifted EBITDA from 4% to 9% and cut agency staffing costs by $6 million a year, while patient satisfaction rose from 78% to 88%.”
Same role. The second version gives a board scale, accountability, strategy, and results in three sentences. In Profile Upgrade’s composite example, that rewrite lifted the profile’s scan score from 34 to 68.
Four moves for an executive profile
- Headline: role, enterprise scale, and market. “Chief operating officer for regional health networks · Turnarounds and growth to $300 million revenue · Open to CEO roles.”
- About section: open with the enterprises you have run and their scale, then two or three decisions with results, then governance exposure, then how to approach you.
- Each role: a two-sentence statement of the mandate and its scale, then three outcome lines with figures.
- Featured section: an annual report you presented, a strategy you published, a talk you gave. Each proves the record in public.
